Nine out of 10 cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented if people exercised more, ate better, stopped smoking and adopted other healthy behaviors. The study findings suggest behavior is the main culprit in type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, and that 91% of the diabetes cases that appeared among 85,000 female nurses could be attributed to habits and forms of behavior. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body cannot properly use the blood sugar-controlling hormone insulin.

None of this  is too hard to do—with the right attitude and support and program.

Obesity is known to be a major contributor to the condition. The most important risk factor, they found, was being overweight. The heavier a nurse was, the greater the risk. But even having a weight at the high end of the normal range nearly tripled the risk. On the other hand, physical activity showed a strong protective effect. Women who exercised for 7 or more hours per week were half as likely to develop diabetes than women who exercised for less than half an hour weekly.

Did You Know, Adding Common Spices to a Diabetic Diet Might Help Lower Blood Sugar Level

The University of Georgia has found that adding common, everyday spices to a diabetic diet may help to lower blood sugar levels in Type 2 sufferers.

If you suffer from Type 2 diabetes, one of the best ways to lower your blood sugar levels may be found on your spice rack.

Researchers at the University of Georgia have found a direct correlation such commonly used spices as clove and cinnamon, and inhibition of tissue damage and inflammation caused by high blood sugar levels.

The study, co-authored by James Hargrove, associate professor of foods and nutrition at the University of Georgia College of Family and Consumer Sciences, stated that “because herbs and spices have a very low calorie content and are relatively inexpensive, they’re a great way to get a lot of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power into your (diabetic) diet.”

These results, which appeared in  the Journal of Medicinal Food, evaluated 24 common herbs and spices.

According to study co-author Diane Hartle, a good herb and spice cabinet and liberally seasoned food could double or even triple the medicinal value of every meal with low calorie contribution.

The researchers found of all the spices tested, clove and cinnamon rated the highest in helping to lower diabetic blood sugar levels. Oregano and sage were rated lowest of all spices tested, yet had a “phenol” level higher than blueberries (blueberries have been considered to be one of the highest rated, anti-oxidant foods available). Of all herbs and spices tested, table pepper rated the lowest in helping lower blood sugar.

AGE compounds, a formation of sugar and protein, have a negative effect on our bodies that activate the immune system, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage that is related to aging and diabetes.  Phenol content in the spices helps to inhibit the formation of these disease causing AGE compounds.
