- Keep fat intake to 7% or less of your diet. In particular, saturated fats (such as butter, margarine, shortening) should be highly restricted. Instead, replace them with monounsaturated fats (olive oil, canola oil) that are good for you. Or, polyunsaturated fat sources (nuts, seeds).
- Control Dietary Cholesterol. High cholesterol foods (such as egg yolks, organ meat, whole milk) should be avoided. Instead, use lean meat (turkey), egg substitutes and low fat milk and dairy products.
