Jump Start the Diabetic Diet to Lower Blood Sugar, Skip the Corn Syrup

December 6th, 2011

I spent much of my career in the food and beverage industry. So it wasn’t surprising that I developed a Plus 6 Soda-a-day habit.

By Robert P. Tracy

Occasionally, I worried about the calorie intake, but not too much.

Then,  after some problems and tests my doctor told me I was Type 2 diabetic. I realized that my daily soda six-pack was contributing over 1,000 calories of unnecessary weight gain.

But as you know, added pounds weren’t the biggest health threat.

After doing some research, I found increasing evidence that the sweetener used in most sodas like Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper is something called high fructose corn syrup. It’s a sweet, cheap substitute for sugar, but it can drain chromium from your system. Big trouble if you are diabetic.

To bring us into science, here is a youtube by the famous Dr. Lusting an expert on food and High fructose Corn Syrup.  Click here to be taken to this most intereesting and vital site.

For all and espically diabetics, Chromium is a very important trace mineral that helps to regulate blood sugar levels in your body. It is found in nature. Too little chromium in your system and your blood sugar levels start to rise.

The Washington Post confirmed this in a recent story. It talking about the link between high fructose corn sweeteners and the growing numbers of diabetic sufferers.

As a part of the program that my medical support team put me on, (a natural Type 2 diabetes recovery program), I stopped my 6 Coke a-day-corn syrup habit. Not only did it help me to shed pounds, but my blood sugar levels dropped.

In addition, my recovery program included chromium supplements. Your body can’t produce this wonderful, blood sugar regulating mineral. It has to come from your diet.

But you need to find a chromium supplement that is both safe and effective in replacing depleted chromium levels. My research showed that niacin-bound chromium or something called polynicotinate is the inly one that works safely.

It’s not complicated, but….”For some of the benefits to be maximized you want to have Chromium in your system before food starts to digest. “Chromium participates in glucose metabolism by enhancing the effects of insulin, the pancreatic hormone that provides cells with glucose for energy and maintains normal blood glucose levels.”

To get your own diabetes recovery program working for you, kick the corn habit and fuel your body with chromium supplements that will help keep your blood sugar levels normal.

Metformin And Alcohol, Some Precautions

June 21st, 2011

metformin alcoholIt is very important for your physician to monitor your progress while taking Metformin to manage diabetes. Clearly a well-guided Diabetic-diet is essential. Regular visits to your doctor are deemed necessary in order to make sure that the medication is working appropriately. To check for any undesired effects, blood tests may also be required.

By Robert P. Tracy, a Diabetic Author

Alcohol will typically produce higher blood sugar readings – just like white rice, white bread, brown rice (white rice died brown), fruit, corn, corn syrup (and high fructose corn syrup) and many other common SuperMarket foods.  Now at some level alcohol is a simple food and a “carbohydrate” like bread – but it does not spoil. The Irish, English and Scotch are famous for preserving the excess wheat, rye and barley in the form of beverages like beer and whiskey. (Or wine, form Grapes in Southern Europe.) Historically these beverages are a way of just storing Carbos, but these Carbos have some side-effects and need to be considered carefully.

When taking Metformin for diabetes management, it is very essential to strictly follow any instruction from your health care provider about the following matters:

1.      Alcohol – taking in alcohol may lead to very low levels of blood sugar. You should talk about this with your health care provider.

2.      When traveling – it is practical to carry a copy of your medical history and a recent prescription. Be always prepared for an emergency, as you would usually do. Make some allowances for the altering zones of time, although keep your meal time as near as possible to your typical time of eating.

3.      Counseling – other members of the family require knowing how to avoid the side effects or alleviate the side effects if they take place. Counseling on pregnancy or birth control may be deemed necessary due to the problems that may take place in diabetes patients who are conceiving.

4.      Other medications – keep from taking any form of medications unless they have been approved by your physician. This particularly includes over-the-counter medications such as aspirin and medications used for hay fever, cough, colds, asthma, and appetite control or sinus problems.

There could be instances when you will be requiring emergency assistance for a problem brought about by your diabetes. You must be always prepared for such cases of emergencies. It is a wise decision to wear a medical identification neck chain or bracelet at all times. In addition to this, you should also carry an identification card in your wallet or purse that indicates that you are suffering from diabetes, including all the medications that you are taking for it.

Under particular conditions, taking in excessive amounts of metformin can lead to lactic acidosis. The lactic acidosis symptoms are quick and severe when they appear and they typically take place when other medical issues not associated to the medication are present and are very severe. This may include kidney failure or heart attack. Unusual weakness or tiredness, unusual sleepiness, excessive muscle cramping or pain, shallow and fast breathing and diarrhea are some of the most common symptoms of lactic acidosis.

Metformin can also lead to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It can also take place if you drink alcohol, take metformin with another kind of medication for diabetes, unable to eat because of vomiting or nausea, exercise more than the usual, miss or delay a snack or a meal and take certain types of medications. The indications of low levels of blood sugar must be immediately addressed before they can lead to unconsciousness. Different individuals experience varying symptoms of low blood sugar. This is why it is essential that you become aware what particular symptoms of low blood sugar you typically have so that you may be able to address it immediately on its onset. If symptoms take place, ingest corn syrup; sugar dissolved in water, honey or glucose tablets.

On the other side is the rising awareness of alternative path that involve an old fashioned diet of complex carbohydrates like our grandparents ate every day.  Some natural supplements are helping to control the journey as we give up the “processed foods” of the SuperMarkets of today.
