Jump Start the Diabetic Diet to Lower Blood Sugar, Skip the Corn Syrup

December 6th, 2011

I spent much of my career in the food and beverage industry. So it wasn’t surprising that I developed a Plus 6 Soda-a-day habit.

By Robert P. Tracy

Occasionally, I worried about the calorie intake, but not too much.

Then,  after some problems and tests my doctor told me I was Type 2 diabetic. I realized that my daily soda six-pack was contributing over 1,000 calories of unnecessary weight gain.

But as you know, added pounds weren’t the biggest health threat.

After doing some research, I found increasing evidence that the sweetener used in most sodas like Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper is something called high fructose corn syrup. It’s a sweet, cheap substitute for sugar, but it can drain chromium from your system. Big trouble if you are diabetic.

To bring us into science, here is a youtube by the famous Dr. Lusting an expert on food and High fructose Corn Syrup.  Click here to be taken to this most intereesting and vital site.

For all and espically diabetics, Chromium is a very important trace mineral that helps to regulate blood sugar levels in your body. It is found in nature. Too little chromium in your system and your blood sugar levels start to rise.

The Washington Post confirmed this in a recent story. It talking about the link between high fructose corn sweeteners and the growing numbers of diabetic sufferers.

As a part of the program that my medical support team put me on, (a natural Type 2 diabetes recovery program), I stopped my 6 Coke a-day-corn syrup habit. Not only did it help me to shed pounds, but my blood sugar levels dropped.

In addition, my recovery program included chromium supplements. Your body can’t produce this wonderful, blood sugar regulating mineral. It has to come from your diet.

But you need to find a chromium supplement that is both safe and effective in replacing depleted chromium levels. My research showed that niacin-bound chromium or something called polynicotinate is the inly one that works safely.

It’s not complicated, but….”For some of the benefits to be maximized you want to have Chromium in your system before food starts to digest. “Chromium participates in glucose metabolism by enhancing the effects of insulin, the pancreatic hormone that provides cells with glucose for energy and maintains normal blood glucose levels.”

To get your own diabetes recovery program working for you, kick the corn habit and fuel your body with chromium supplements that will help keep your blood sugar levels normal.

The Secret of the Diabetic Diet: Complex Carbs vs. Low Carbs, One Lowers Blood Sugar

May 24th, 2011

diab-x copmlex carbsFor years there was little understanding on how diet and nutrition can really help the effects of Type II Diabetes. Today, thousands of registered dieticians have formulated the Diabetic Diet to help give the body the right kinds of nutrients it needs to heal and repair itself. The result is that the use or need for insulin can be drastically decreased for patients that follow a specially formulated Diabetic Diet.

By Robert P> Tracy

The first thing people with Type II Diabetes need to understand is that not all sugars or carbs are bad. There is such a thing as good carbs and good sugars. We are going to focus on the good carbs here. Bad carbs and an excess of carbs as a whole are the reason that many people develop Type II Diabetes. Too much white bread and not enough whole grains. Studies have proven that the unnecessary processing and additives that are used in “low-carb” foods actually have a negative effect on people with Type II Diabetes. The real secret is complex carbs.

Complex carbs allow the body to lose weight naturally by giving it the whole nutrients it needs to increase the function of body systems. Complex carbs are found in beans and whole grains. Both of these foods are calorie rich but also filling so a little goes a long way. These foods are also rapidly absorbed into the body similar to the way fat and sugar is. The body realizes it is full even though the portions are smaller. Overeating confuses the body and causes it to produce more insulin than necessary which leads to Type II Diabetes.

It is easy to say that you will eat more complex carbs in the form of whole grains, vegetables and beans. But for most people, the dietary change seems like an insurmountable mountain. Start with little things first. Instead of picking up white bread at the grocery store, opt for a whole grain bread. Be careful as labels can be misleading. Read the ingredients, a good whole grain bread that is idea for those on a diabetic diet should not have any processed flours in it. Instead it should be 100% of whatever grain and whole wheat flour. Spelt and Flax Seed bread are both popular whole grain bread choices for those on a diabetic diet. From there, you can start changing the sugars in your diet. Consider sugar-free Cool Whip with pineapple and blueberries for a snack over processed sugar-free cookies or high-fat cakes.

On a diabetic diet it is important to be sure your body gets all the nutrients it needs. While it is not a quick process, over time the body will adjust to your new, healthy eating style and therefore begin to repair itself. Sticking to the diet requires a person to constantly be in check with their dietary needs and meal planning. Even when you are out of the house, plan ahead with a diabetic friendly meal that can be heated up and safe snacks to munch on.

How to Stop Diabetes in its Track with Dietary Changes – What Should be in the Kitchen

May 13th, 2011

30 Million People Are Diabetic today!

By Robert P. Tracy

Diabetes is affecting more and more people every day. With a world that is filled with high-stress and not enough hours, people are reaching for processed, sugary and fatty foods as an easy solution to every meal. Overtime the chemical additives that are in foods wreak havoc on hormone levels. Many times this leads to the body becoming insulin resistant or producing too little insulin to properly support the body’s digestive processes. The medical term for a person who produces too little insulin or becomes insulin resistant is Diabetes. While diabetes can be managed with mild exercise, insulin tracking and medication, a dietary overhaul is what will be most beneficial at stopping diabetes in its track.

THINK ABOUT IT: In 1950 we did not have 30 Million type 2 Diabetics in the USCould it be the food, the high fructose corn syrup?

The Skinny on Eating Healthy

All our lives medical professionals say to “eat healthy.” However, no one ever elaborates on what that specifically means. For some people, eating healthy means less red meat, others believe that eating diet foods is healthier and then there are some people who think that eating less calories, regardless of the food, is considered healthy. At the end of the day, “eat healthy” means to have a diet that is filled with whole foods. The chemical processing and additives that many foods go through add chemicals and toxins to the body. These contribute to over 70% of medical problems including diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Extreme dietary changes can be used to help treat diabetes and reverse it all together. In order for this to be successful, a person must commit to a truly healthy eating diet. After years of being set in your dietary ways, it is time to take charge and give your body the nutrients it needs to function properly and successfully treat diabetes.

What Should and Should Not Be In Your Kitchen?

The easiest way to manage the foods in your household is to eliminate anything that is processed. This includes foods that are canned, pre-made, microwavable and loaded with sugars or fats. Essentially, 90% of the foods you would buy in the aisles of the grocery store are hindering your body’s ability to treat diabetes. When shopping, purchase those foods that are not pre-packaged and labeled organic as much as possible. A diet to help manage diabetes should include plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid high sugar fruits such as bananas, pineapple and grapes. Watermelon, apples and berries are a better choice. Choose dark, leafy vegetables that are filled with calcium, fiber and antioxidants such as romaine lettuce, baby spinach, mushrooms, onions and bell peppers. For breads, always select whole grain breads such as whole wheat or sourdough. Read the ingredients and be sure that additives and processed ingredients like bleached white flour are not on the list. Choose low-fat dairy products including yogurt, cottage cheese and milk. Finally, choose sides such as frozen vegetables, fresh vegetables and grains that are high in protein including quinoa and organic brown rice. You can cut down on the time spent preparing meals by chopping up all vegetables and fruits after they are purchased and storing them in air tight containers. Also take the time to season, brown or chop meats and vegetables for meals a few days in advanced. Over the course of six months to one year, you will see a drastic increase in your body’s hormone levels and by maintaining a healthy diet rich in whole foods, you can eliminate diabetes.
