For a Winning Diabetic Diet, Those “Complex Carbohydrates” Are the Real Secret

As we talk to hundreds of people, we always them to sit down with a certified diabetes educator (Like a dietitian the really knows diabetes!), and find out what works for you.  Simple sugars will hurt, but after all of those low cab diets the answer is in eating lots of those “complex” carbohydrates.   In nations devoid of diabetes they eat complex carbohydrates and 15% protein from meat, fish and insects.  But clearly skip the Bugs. 

One of the three legs to defeat diabetes is the diabetic diet (What you eat!)

On a good Diabetic Diet, the body is forced to handle only the complex starches.  This takes far more work to digest, as opposed to simple sugars. When you eat starches, the first thing your digestive tract does is to break the complex starch down into the simple sugars of which it is composed. In getting the energy out of these starches, your body cells need first to have them broken down into simple sugars, because only these simple sugars can be used directly by the cell for energy.

So you might very reasonably ask: What is the difference? If the body is going to break them down into simple sugars anyway, why not save it all the trouble and eat simple sugars in the first place? That is a good question, and the answer has several parts.

Sugars are devoid of vitamins  (Get diabetic focused Supplements in your routine)

First, simple sugars are devoid of vitamins and other essential nutrients, whereas the complex starches that you eat, such as lima beans, whole grain bread, and so forth, will not only be composed of sugars for energy but will also have the many needed nutrients.

Simple sugars will raise your blood fats

Second, experience tells us that simple sugars will raise your blood fats and make you put on weight, whereas the complex starches will not.  A meal of complex carbohydrates and you are not hungry for desert right away, or in and hour when the “sugar cravings” normally kick in.

Your pancreas, over reacts

Third, when you eat simple sugars, the sugar gets into your bloodstream at a very high rate-so fast, in fact, that your pancreas, in effect, over reacts, producing more insulin than is really needed to metabolize the consumed sugar.

Here’s why

The result is that your blood sugar will often be driven to lower than normal levels before the pancreas can be turned off once again, and you may find yourself experiencing the uncomfortable signs of hypoglycemia: weakness, depression, and perhaps dizziness.  So it is pretty clear that when someone tells you that it is silly to avoid sugar because the body cannot live without sugar, he’s off on the wrong track. The body definitely needs sugar, it is true, but it needs sugar at complex starch rates, not at candy bar rates.

 Don’t Forget

In 2001 we were again told that diabetes is at least 90% preventable. (The New England Journal of Medicine September 13, 2001; 345).  Other studies show that type 2 is reversible with lifestyle changes.

 How hard is it to go on a real “Diet for Diabetes”?

Well there is some unlearning and RE_LEARNING to do.  The hardest part is, just try to figure out what to eat out of today’s supermarket.  We have a “Natural Human Need” to eat and eat and pack in high caloric food. Our distant “ancestors” needed to do this to be ready for 4-day hunts.  Now when did that happen last?

  So the diabetic who is taking control of their blood sugar, diet and weight and acting to reverse their diabetic symptoms is eating complex carbohydrates, whole grains, vegetables and legumes, many beans, salads, lean protein and “good” fats—all in place of those things that we crave like concentrated sweets or “simple” carbs.   

Let me tell you, once on this diet for 4 weeks and you will be liked a reformed smoker, but only a reformed junk food junkie!
